On Friday, Borussia Dortmund suffered a disheartening 2 - 0 loss at the hands of Eintracht Frankfurt. This marked their third consecutive Bundesliga defeat, exacerbating the crisis within the club.
The outcome further intensifies the pressure on Dortmund's already - beleaguered coach, Nuri Sahin. Despite the mid - week loss to struggling Holstein Kiel, Sahin had retained the support of the club bosses.
The visitors had an early opportunity in the match. In the ninth minute, Serhou Guirassy's header hit the post, narrowly missing the mark.
Just nine minutes later, Eintracht caught Dortmund completely off - guard. Hugo Ekitike initiated a swift counter - attack and then calmly slotted the ball in to give his team the lead.
Eintracht, missing their top striker Omar Marmoush, nearly scored a second goal four minutes later. Ansgar Knauff's well - curled effort hit the post, keeping the score at 1 - 0.
Prior to the game, the club had announced that transfer negotiations were underway with an unnamed club regarding the transfer of Egyptian forward Marmoush. Reports suggest that Manchester City is on the verge of signing the striker. Marmoush walked onto the pitch after the final whistle to congratulate his Eintracht teammates, likely in his last appearance in front of the home crowd.
Dortmund, set to travel to Bologna for the Champions League on Tuesday, struggled to find a way back into the game. Despite their efforts to equalize, Serhou Guirassy twice went down in the box, appealing for a penalty, but instead received a yellow card.
It was Eintracht who sealed the deal with a second goal. Oscar Hojlund found himself with an abundance of space, charging into the box to secure Dortmund's third league defeat of the year.
Eintracht's third consecutive win solidified their grip on third place in the standings, amassing 36 points. They trail second - placed champions Bayer Leverkusen by two points, who will face Borussia Moenchengladbach on Saturday. In contrast, Dortmund languishes in a distant 10th place with 25 points.
