A first-half penalty from Dominic Solanke gave Tottenham Hotspur a 1-0 win at Eintracht Frankfurt in the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final on Thursday and a 2-1 aggregate victory.

They will face Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt, who beat Lazio on penalties, in May for a place in the final.

Tottenham continue their quest to lift a European trophy for the first time in more than 40 years since their UEFA Cup triumph in 1984 as they seek redemption for a disappointing domestic campaign.

Playing in heavy rain, Eintracht showed more intent in the early stages but lost Mario Gotze early on after the veteran playmaker picked up what appeared to be a hamstring injury.

He was replaced by Farès Chaïbi, who wasted no time in getting on the scoresheet and soon had a header saved by Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

Tottenham were without captain Son Heung-min, who did not travel because of a foot injury. Mathys Tel, who joined Spurs on loan from Bayern Munich in January, started in his place.

The 19-year-old made the visitors' first attempt on goal after 26 minutes, unleashing a curling shot from outside the area that forced Eintracht goalkeeper Santos into a fine save.

Solanke gave Tottenham the lead from the spot two minutes before half-time after the visitors were awarded a penalty for a foul by goalkeeper Kaua Santos on Spurs midfielder James Maddison.

Maddison headed the ball before colliding with the onrushing Santos and the referee pointed to the spot after a VAR review.

The 2022 champions refused to accept their fate and pushed for an equaliser after the restart, but lacked the finishing touch.

With 15 minutes remaining, the hosts stormed into Vicario's goal, the keeper denying Chaibi from close range before Rasmus Kristensen's header went just wide.

The Danish defender had two more chances in the next few minutes, firing wide and being denied by Vicario.

In the end, Frankfurt lost 2-1 on aggregate to Tottenham Hotspur and were eliminated from the quarter-finals.

Tottenham Hotspur reached the last four of a European competition for the first time since their run to the 2019 Champions League final, where they lost 2-0 to fellow Premier League side Liverpool.
