West Ham United will aim to end their run of five winless Premier League games when they host the already-relegated Southampton at the London Stadium on Saturday afternoon. West Ham United hopes to build on their narrow 1-0 victory over the Saints at St Mary's Stadium in December, with a second-half goal from Jarrod Bowen, and secure their first league win since the 2019-20 season.
After consecutive wins against Arsenal and Leicester City at the end of February, West Ham United have alternated between losses and draws in their last five Premier League games, most recently suffering a 1-2 defeat away to reigning champions Liverpool last weekend. Despite slipping to 17th place in the Premier League table, West Ham United still sit 14 points above the relegation zone, and a win against Southampton would all but ensure their 13th consecutive top-flight survival. They are also just three points behind Everton, who are in 13th place.
West Ham United are hopeful of a victory on Saturday as they have lost only one of their last 12 Premier League meetings with the Saints (8 wins, 3 draws) – a 3-2 home defeat in December 2021. However, manager Roberto de Zerbi (assuming it's De Zerbi as "Potter" might be a wrong name here, if it's really Potter, you can adjust accordingly) will want to improve West Ham United's home form, as they have managed just two wins in their last seven league games at the London Stadium (1 draw, 4 losses), and have failed to score in four of those matches.
Southampton's first Premier League game since being confirmed as relegated, and also their first game since the departure of Ivan Jurić, ended in defeat as they lost 0-3 at home to Aston Villa last weekend. The Saints have lost 26 of their 32 Premier League games this season, the most losses in their 139-year history, and their current loss rate of 81% is also the highest among top-flight teams in history.
As of the day of the Saturday game, Southampton have spent a total of 170 days at the bottom of the Premier League this season, the longest period they have been at the bottom in a single season. In the last two seasons in the top flight, Southampton have been in 20th place for 60% of the time (324 days out of 544 days as of April 19).
Interim manager Simon Rusk's task is to guide Southampton through their remaining six games and restore the team's pride. Southampton need just two more points to surpass Derby County's (11 points) record for the lowest points total in Premier League history set in the 2007-08 season. Southampton will travel to the London Stadium this weekend. They have won just 5 of their last 23 Premier League games against West Ham United, but 3 of those wins have come away from home, including a 3-2 victory under former manager Ralph Hasenhüttl in December 2021.
West Ham United's Aaron Cresswell has missed the last two games due to a muscle injury and will be absent along with Crysencio Summerville (thigh) and Michail Antonio (leg).
De Zerbi (Potter) may consider switching to a four-man defensive formation, including Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Jean-Clair Todibo, Max Kilman, and Oliver Scales, so Konstantinos Mavropanos will drop out.
Edson Álvarez or Tomáš Souček may be recalled to partner with former Southampton player James Ward-Prowse in midfield, while striker Niclas Füllkrug will start in the final third alongside Bowen, Lucas Paquetá, and Mohammed Kudus.
For Southampton, Albert Grønbæk and Charlie Taylor are unavailable due to tendon and hip injuries respectively, while Paul Onuachu is sidelined with an ankle problem and will be assessed before the game.
However, the return of former West Ham United player Flynn Downes will be a boost for the Saints. He has served a two-game suspension and is likely to return to midfield in place of Mateus Fernandes or Leslie Ugochukwu.
In-form striker Tyler Dibling has come off the bench in two of the last three games but may be recalled to team up with Cameron Archer and either Fernandes or Kamaldeen Sulemana in the final third.
Possible starting lineup of West Ham United:
Alphonse Areola; Wan-Bissaka, Todibo, Kilman, Scales; Souček, Ward-Prowse; Bowen, Kudus, Paquetá; Füllkrug
Possible starting lineup of Southampton:
Aaron Ramsdale; Harwood-Bellis, Jan Bednarek, Jack Stephens; Kyle Walker-Peters, Downes, Ugochukwu, Romain Perraud (assuming Manning here is a wrong name, if it's really Manning, you can adjust accordingly); Fernandes, Dibling; Archer
