Real Madrid will continue their pursuit of the La Liga title as they travel to the south of the Spanish capital on Wednesday to face Getafe at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez. Real Madrid currently sit in second place, four points behind Barcelona, while Getafe will enter the midweek clash in 12th position.
Getafe has recorded 10 wins, 9 draws, and 13 losses in their 32 La Liga matches this season and currently occupies a mid-table position. Three of those 13 defeats have come in Getafe's last four games, including two consecutive losses after a convincing 4-0 victory over Valladolid earlier this month. Following a 3-1 home defeat to Las Palmas, Los Azulones suffered a narrow 1-0 loss to Espanyol. Getafe was forced to play with only 10 men as Christian Uche received a red card for a dangerous foul in the 60th minute.
Crucially, Getafe still leads the relegation zone by 9 points. Instead of worrying, they are harboring ambitions of qualifying for the European competitions. Currently, they are just 4 points adrift of the top eight. If Getafe wants to make a late charge for European qualification, they need to improve their poor home form. In their last seven league games at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez, they have only won once. However, they can draw some inspiration from the fact that their only victory during that period was against third-placed Atlético Madrid.
Real Madrid lost their chance of defending their UEFA Champions League title in the quarter-final against Arsenal and are now focused on securing a domestic double. Real Madrid's coach seemed to encounter more setbacks in the La Liga game against Athletic Bilbao at home on Sunday. It was not until Federico Valverde scored a stunning winning goal in the 93rd minute that Real Madrid secured a dramatic 1-0 victory. Real Madrid entered the midweek game four points behind league leaders Barcelona.
Real Madrid will continue to defend their league title in the away game against Getafe on Wednesday. However, they will also have one eye on the Copa del Rey final against their El Clásico rivals Barcelona in Seville on Saturday, where they will seek to avenge the two heavy defeats against Xavi Hernández's side this season.
Real Madrid aims to win the Copa del Rey for the second time in three seasons. They will strive to build momentum by securing a third consecutive league double over Getafe. In their previous encounter in December, goals from Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappé helped Real Madrid secure a 2-0 victory over Getafe. Real Madrid has won their last two away La Liga games, first defeating Villarreal 2-1 and then narrowly beating Alavés 1-0. The visitors on Wednesday now have the opportunity to achieve their first away league three-game winning streak since the end of last season.
