Two first-half goals from Scott McTominay helped Napoli to a 2-0 home win over Torino in Serie A on Sunday, as the hosts regained sole possession of top spot in the table with four games remaining.

Napoli top the Serie A table on 74 points, three clear of defending champions Inter Milan, who suffered a 1-0 home defeat to AS Roma on Sunday.

The win also secured a top-four finish for Napoli, who will return to the Champions League after a one-year absence.

"It's not the first time we're in the lead, we've been in the lead more than anyone else," Napoli coach Antonio Conte said after the game. "However, there are fewer and fewer games and you can pay for any type of mistake in a big way. We are mathematically in the Champions League, a very important economic goal for the club, and you have to enjoy it at least a little."

The 2023 champions had leapfrogged Inter at the top of Serie A in the previous round with a 1-0 win at lowly Monza, only for Simone Inzaghi's men to suffer a last-gasp defeat at Bologna the following day.

Napoli took the lead in the seventh minute through McTominay, who fired home from close range. Frank Anguissa squared for the in-form Scottish midfielder, who found the net with a composed first touch.

The 28-year-old doubled his side's advantage on the stroke of half-time, latching on to Matteo Politano's neat cross from the penalty spot for his fifth goal in his last three appearances.

McTominay, who joined Napoli from Manchester United in August, has now scored 11 goals in his first season in Serie A.

Napoli, however, have slowed down considerably since taking the lead and their only two efforts on goal have been converted by the Scot.

Torino, 10th on 43 points, finished the game without a shot on target.
