Thomas Partey's future at Arsenal has taken yet another twist. According to Marca, the Ghana midfielder is a "big target" for Atletico Madrid in the upcoming transfer window. Partey's contract at Arsenal expires on 30 June.

Previous reports suggested that Arsenal had agreed a deal to allow Partey to leave. However, new claims this week suggest a possible contract extension. The turn of events adds a new layer of complexity to what had appeared to be a straightforward exit for the 31-year-old.

Atletico Madrid, in particular, are keen to bring their former enforcer back to the Spanish capital. As Marca put it, they have been "searching in vain" for a player to anchor their midfield since Partey left for North London in 2020. Arsenal's recent hiring of Andrea Berta, Atletico's former sporting director, only adds to the speculation and makes negotiations easier.

While Atletico Madrid appear determined, they are far from the only suitors circling. According to Marca, Partey is also "interested in a move to Barcelona", while Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus are also closely monitoring the situation.

Atletico's urgency is understandable. In Diego Simeone's tactical set-up, a strong, disciplined midfield pivot is essential. Not surprisingly, they see Partey - a player they know well - as the ideal candidate.

If Atletico fail to land Partey, they have contingency plans in place, notably targeting Tottenham Hotspur's Cristian Romero and Rodrigo Bentancur, both of whom could provide the defensive solidity Simeone craves.

For Arsenal, Partey's potential departure is another piece in their evolving midfield strategy. The Gunners are already preparing for Jorginho's departure, with Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi reportedly being lined up as a replacement.

Should Partey also leave, Mikel Arteta's side could be forced to make further additions. Declan Rice, brilliant as he has been, cannot carry the midfield alone, especially if Arsenal are to compete in four competitions next season.

Interestingly, the potential signing of Mikel Merino - assuming he isn't pushed further forward or replaced - suggests that Arteta wants versatility and depth. The loss of Partey would therefore likely trigger a significant second midfield signing alongside Zubimendi.
