Burton Albion significantly improved their chances of survival in League One while confirming Cambridge United's relegation, emerging victorious in a tumultuous match against Neil Harris's team on Saturday, where both sides finished the second half with 10 players each.

Two red cards led to three goals at the Pirelli Stadium, as Elias Kachunga's equalizer canceled out Jon Dadi Bodvarsson's early opener for Cambridge, before Dylan Williams scored his first goal of the season in the 93rd minute to secure the win for Burton.

While Cambridge fans mourned their team's drop to the fourth tier, Burton supporters celebrated a crucial victory that puts their survival in their own hands for the remaining fixtures.

Sitting in 20th place, Burton Albion are three points ahead of both Crawley Town and Bristol Rovers, and they have a game in hand on each, meaning a draw against either Wigan Athletic or Charlton Athletic on the final day will likely ensure their League One status.

Burton's strong home form offers hope, with the team scoring in nine consecutive games at the Pirelli Stadium and losing only twice in that run—to Bolton Wanderers and champions Birmingham City.

In contrast, Wigan Athletic are aiming for a respectable top-half finish, and under Ryan Lowe, they are finishing the season strongly, unbeaten in their last six games and showing solid defensive resilience.

Wigan secured a draw in their latest match against Blackpool, with Jon Mellish scoring early, though Steve Bruce's side equalized via a Lee Evans penalty, halting Wigan's bid for a third straight win after 1-0 victories over Shrewsbury Town and Rotherham United.

Currently in 16th, Wigan are comfortably safe from relegation and unlikely to climb into the top 12, with their games often low-scoring—they have netted the fewest goals in the league (38) and conceded the third-fewest (40), scoring just seven times in their last seven matches.

Historically, recent meetings between Burton and Wigan have been goal-filled, with both teams scoring in the last three encounters, two of which Burton won 2-1, suggesting a potential opportunity for Burton to seal their survival midweek.

Burton will be without playmaker JJ McKiernan, who is suspended for one match after two bookings against Cambridge, paving the way for Fabio Tavares, Anthony Forde, or Mason Bennett to step in—Tavares impressed as a substitute by assisting the winning goal.

Forde could also fill in at right wing-back for the injured Kyran Lofthouse, who exited Saturday's game with an unspecified issue, joining Geraldo Bajrami on the injury list.

Wigan emerged from their Blackpool clash without new injuries, but they remain without Liverpool loanee Luke Chambers (back injury) and Joe Adams (season-ending ACL injury), while striker Will Goodwin is sidelined with a quad problem, leaving Dale Taylor as their main forward option, with Callum McManaman, Chris Sze, Maleace Asamoah, and Jonny Smith vying for supporting roles.

Burton Albion possible starting lineup:

Crocombe; Armer, Sweeney, Godwin-Malife; Forde, Williams, Chauke, Dodgson; Tavares; Burrell, Bodvarsson

Wigan Athletic possible starting lineup:

Tickle; Carragher, Kerr, Aimson, Robinson; Dale, Adeeko, Mellish; Weir; Sze, Taylor
