Atletico Madrid intends to sell Correa and Riquelme to cash in to fund new signings through transfer revenue.
According to reports, the names of Correa and Riquelme are particularly important on Atletico's departure list. Although the two are in different situations, they are both part of the club's strategy to fund new signings through transfer revenue.
Correa's contract will expire in 2026, but he may face two situations this summer: being sold or renewing his contract. However, after playing for the team for ten seasons, all parties believed that his cycle was over, so he never considered extending his contract.
Especially in the past few transfer windows, he tried to leave but failed. Therefore, selling him now has become a necessity. In the summer of 2019, AC Milan showed strong interest in the Argentine player when Correa was dissatisfied with his substitute role. But the deal fell through because Atletico Madrid demanded a transfer fee of 50 million euros (Milan was only willing to pay 38 million).
During the winter transfer window last year, Correa's attitude became more hesitant and he began to consider leaving the team more firmly. Jeddah United offered the player an annual salary of 15 million euros, but the transfer fee they were willing to pay to Atletico was far from the club's expectations. Atletico believed that as a member of the World Cup champion, Correa's market value was high.
But now, considering his contribution to the team, both parties hope to reach a mutually beneficial agreement. As for Riquelme, although he is one of the highly valued players in the club, the lack of playing time has also forced him to seek a solution.
In January this year, Atletico rejected Villarreal's request for a loan and rejected Aston Villa's interest. At present, the club intends to use his good reputation in many clubs in Spain and Europe as a bargaining chip to reduce the cost of introducing players such as Romero.
Galan's situation is also up in the air. Like Correa, he will also enter the final year of his contract next season, so his future is full of uncertainty. Although Atletico is interested in putting him on the market, the transfer fee he is expected to bring is far less than Correa and Riquelme.
