Atlético Madrid's aspirations for the LaLiga title took a significant hit on Saturday, as they were held to a goalless draw by the relegation-threatened Alavés at Mendizorrotza Stadium.
Although Atlético, who last claimed LaLiga in 2021, controlled the ball, they lacked creativity and speed to break through Alavés's well-organized defense.
Diego Simeone's team stayed in third place with 67 points, trailing leaders Barcelona by nine points, who face Real Valladolid later that day.
The first half was cautious with no shots on target, the key incident being Julián Álvarez's initial red card for a high boot on Facundo Garcés, later downgraded to a yellow after VAR review.
Antoine Griezmann started for the first time in three league matches but couldn't spark Atlético's attack, as the team failed to produce a shot in the first 45 minutes.
Alavés had an early second-half opportunity, but Jon Guridi missed a header from close range while unmarked in Atlético's box.
Simeone introduced attackers Alexander Sørloth and Samuel Lino as substitutes, energizing the game; Lino registered Atlético's first shot on target in the 71st minute.
Alavés responded with Kike Garcia's close-range effort, which was brilliantly saved by Jan Oblak.
In the final stages, Alavés goalkeeper Antonio Sivera faced heavy pressure from Atlético's advances, but the visitors couldn't secure a winning goal.
The draw lifted Alavés to 16th place, now three points above the relegation zone.
"This is a valuable point against a strong team," said Alavés defender Facundo Garcés. "I'm pleased with our effort; it builds our confidence and points tally. We're united and must keep fighting to make our stadium a stronghold for the remaining home games."
