It is reported that West Ham has had multiple locker room conflicts under two head coaches this season. During his eight-month tenure, former head coach Lopetegui had conflicts with players such as Todibo, Areola and Kudus, and eventually set the shortest coaching record in the club's history, being fired after only 22 games.
But after Potter took office, the tense atmosphere did not dissipate. According to reports, physical conflicts still broke out between players, and Potter is currently working to stabilize the team's emotions.
However, in the 15 Premier League games he coached, West Ham only won 3 games, and they have not won for eight consecutive rounds, which is the longest unbeaten record since January 2023.
West Ham had considered offering Porter only a short-term contract, but under the leadership of vice chairman Karen Brady, they finally reached a two-and-a-half-year agreement with Porter without a termination clause.
According to sources, the club also approached former Milan coach Fonseca, who flew to London to meet with major shareholder Sullivan, but ultimately chose Porter.
At the press conference last Friday, Porter's tone was slightly relaxed, but he also admitted that the pressure had affected his family life: "We almost won the games against Brighton and Liverpool, but as long as we lost, the situation would be bad in an instant. My family also knows when to 'let Dad be alone'."
The future transfer window will be a key factor in Potter's fate. He expects this summer to be "exciting", but due to the absence of European competitions and tight funds, West Ham needs to sell players first: Kudus may be sold, Bowen is not for sale, and other veteran contracts will expire. West Ham must sell first and then buy, making Potter's challenge in the new season even more arduous.
