Aston Villa's victory over Tottenham in the Premier League at Villa Park will put them in a strong position to qualify for the Champions League.
Villa narrowly beat Bournemouth 1-0 in the last round of the league, and with only two games left, they have 63 points, the same as fifth-placed Chelsea, while Spurs are 17th on 38 points after losing 0-2 to Crystal Palace last Sunday. The home team was lucky to escape the Vitality Stadium with three points against Bournemouth as they only had six shots on goal, three of which came in first-half stoppage time, and the winners had their last shot a minute into the second half.
Head coach Unai Emery will not care about the nature of the victory as they only trail the last Champions League qualification spot on goal difference, although Chelsea still have to face Manchester United and seventh-placed Nottingham Forest on the last day of the season. Reports have suggested the club is at risk of breaching profit and sustainability rules, and failure to qualify for Europe's top club competition could have a significant impact on the club's ability to retain its best players. Villa entered Friday's game with two clean sheets in a row, in fact they have stopped opponents from scoring five times in their last eight top-flight games, conceding just three times in that period.
Unai Emery's side have been in excellent form in the Premier League, winning seven of their last eight games, losing just one and scoring 16 goals. The hosts have an excellent home record, with the team unbeaten in their last 20 games at Villa Park, winning 14 of them, including the last seven games at the stadium.
Tottenham, who had 23 shots, 10 on target and eight clear chances, could easily concede more than two goals against Crystal Palace. Head coach Angie Postecoglou has overseen the worst season in the London side's Premier League history, and a loss on Friday would be the team's 21st defeat in 37 league games. Tottenham have already faced the hosts twice this season, losing 2-1 in the FA Cup at Villa Park on February 9 and winning 4-1 at home in the top flight on November 3, 2024.
The Australian manager said Spurs' poor domestic form was due to injuries and performances in the Europa League, and said his team's focus was on reaching the Europa League final. Postecoglou has suffered seven defeats in his last 10 Premier League games, with the only win coming in a 3-1 win over bottom-placed Southampton on April 6. The visitors are also winless in their last five away league games, losing four, conceding 13 goals and scoring just four.
Aston Villa predicted starting lineup:
Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Torres, Digne; Kamara, Onana; Rodgers, Asensio, McGinn; Watkins
Tottenham Hotspur predicted starting lineup:
Vicario; Porro, Danso, Davies, Spence; Gray, Bissouma, Sarr; Johnson, Richarlison, Son Heung-min
