Barcelona claimed their 28th LaLiga title on Thursday after defeating city rivals Espanyol 2-0, establishing an unbeatable seven-point lead over second-placed Real Madrid with only two games remaining.
After their 4-3 defeat to Barcelona on Sunday, Real Madrid had to win their last three matches and hope the leaders dropped at least two points in that time to have any chance of the title.
However, Real Madrid's faint hopes were extinguished when Lamine Yamal scored a brilliant curling shot into the net in the 53rd minute, and Fermín López sealed the victory with a close-range finish, assisted by Yamal, deep into stoppage time.
This result propelled Hansi Flick's Barcelona to 85 points, seven ahead of Real Madrid, the previous season's champions, while Atlético Madrid sits third with 70 points. It marks an outstanding first season for coach Hansi Flick at Barcelona, as his team has achieved the LaLiga and Copa del Rey double.
The Catalan club announced they will receive the league trophy on Friday during a special ceremony in the city.
Barcelona was on the verge of clinching the title without playing on Wednesday, but Real Madrid's late winner against Mallorca kept their slim chances alive.
Ultimately, Barcelona handled the challenge themselves with a hard-earned victory over Espanyol, though the match was briefly delayed after several fans were injured in a car incident outside the stadium.
Espanyol arguably dominated the first half, which ended goalless, thanks to Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny's outstanding reflex save that denied Javi Puado from point-blank range during several threatening counter-attacks.
As Barcelona struggled to find a breakthrough, teenage star Lamine Yamal changed the game with his signature move, scoring a stunning goal.
The 17-year-old collected the ball on the right flank, executed a brilliant run along the edge of the box, and fired a curling shot past two defenders into the top corner.
Lamine's goal is a result of his rigorous practice; he scored twice in the warm-up the same way. We must protect him and let him enjoy it—he's exceptional, his teammate Pedri told Movistar Plus.
You don't win a league every day, so now we should celebrate and enjoy this trophy. It was one of the toughest titles. We're thrilled with the season; we've had fun, and so have the fans.
Yamal's strike boosted Barcelona's confidence, allowing them to take control. After Leandro Cabrera received a straight red card for elbowing Yamal in the 80th minute, substitute López added the second goal to spark the title celebrations.
