Rayo Vallecano aims to finish in the top seven of La Liga and qualify for the Europa League on the last day of the season, as they face Mallorca on Saturday at the Vallecas Stadium. The hosts currently occupy the last spot in Europe, but are only one point behind seventh-placed Celta Vigo thanks to a crucial win last time out, while the visitors will aim to consolidate their tenth position with a win.
Rayo Vallecano enters the last day of La Liga with the goal of winning the European Football Championship for the first time since 2001 and the second time in the club's history, having finished in the top eight of La Liga in recent weeks. After finishing in first place, five points above the relegation zone, San Frangi Rojos has made a big improvement this season, with 51 points from 37 games so far, including 13 wins and 12 losses.
Los Franjirrojos were four points behind Celta Vigo in the last guaranteed Europa League spot with two games left to play, and they kept their hopes of finishing in the top seven alive and closed the gap with a crucial 2-1 win, thanks to an early equaliser from Isi Palazon and a decisive goal from Jorge de Frutos.
Rayo Vallecano are currently in eighth place, which would earn them a Europa League playoff spot, but if Celta Vigo drops points they would move up to seventh, while a loss or a draw would see them fall out of the Europa League, so Rayo Vallecano are desperate to get their fourth win in five games before the end of the season to be able to play in the Europa League next season.
Meanwhile, their visitors lost in their last European match, so they must fight to keep their top half spot on the final day.
Mallorca, who went into Saturday's game ahead of the hosts and sit as high as seventh with six games remaining at the end of April, have spent much of the season in the top eight, collecting 44 points from 32 games. However, they have since suffered a painful drop-off in a tough schedule, adding just three points to the table with a 2-1 home win over Valladolid after consecutive defeats to Barcelona and Girona.
The win did move Yagoba Arrasate's side into eighth place with three games remaining, but they were unable to build on that run, going on to lose 2-1 away to Real Madrid after scoring an injury-time winner, and they lost by the same scoreline at home to Getafe last weekend, with Sailer Larin's goal coming too late to turn the tide.
Mallorca is currently unable to catch up with the home team in eighth place and Osasuna in ninth place, while Real Sociedad in 11th place is only one point behind, so Mallorca will strive to win on the last day to at least ensure a top-half finish in a competition that has improved and is commendable this season.
Rayo Vallecano predicted starting lineup:
Batala; Baliu, Lejon, Sis, Pacha; Ratiu, Lopez, Gombau, De Frutos; Parazon, Embarba
Mallorca predicted starting lineup:
Greve; Bauza, Valjent, Raillo, Mojica; Mascarell, Costa; Larin, Dald, Rodriguez; Muric
