Fiorentina winger Nicolo Zaniolo may face a significant ban after Roma accused their former player of assaulting two youth team players.
The incident reportedly occurred after Fiorentina's 2-1 victory over Roma in the Primavera youth league semi-final on Monday, with Zaniolo observing from the stands.
Zaniolo, who was on loan at Aston Villa during the 2023-24 season, has denied any misconduct following Roma's statement about the "regrettable incident," and the Italian soccer federation has launched an investigation as reported on Tuesday.
"On the evening of May 26, at the end of the Primavera semi-final between Fiorentina and AS Roma at Viola Park, Nicolo Zaniolo, a Fiorentina first-team player, unlawfully entered the Roma locker room area with an acquaintance, despite lacking proper accreditation," stated Roma.
"Witnesses reported that Zaniolo seemed highly agitated. He urinated in the facilities designated for Roma, provoked the players, and without any prior verbal exchange, physically struck Mattia Almaviva and forcefully pushed Marco Litti against a bench.
"Litti was in recovery from shoulder surgery. Both players were medically evaluated at a hospital: Almaviva with a 10-day prognosis and Litti with a 21-day prognosis.
"AS Roma extends full solidarity to its young players and is deeply outraged by the violent and unwarranted behavior at Viola Park. We expect the relevant authorities to take firm action to ensure justice and uphold the values of Italian football."
Zaniolo is currently on loan at Fiorentina from Galatasaray, having moved there from Roma after five years, during which he was honored as Serie A Young Player of the Year in 2019.
"After the match, I went to the locker room to congratulate the Fiorentina team and then visited the Roma locker room to greet and commend them on their season," Zaniolo stated via Fiorentina. "However, they began insulting me, so to avoid escalation, I chose to leave."
