Callum Wilson has openly admitted that he found it challenging to be benched to accommodate Alexander Isak at Newcastle United.

Wilson, 33, will become a free agent this summer after his contract with the club expires.

He ended the season with just one goal from his 22 appearances across all competitions.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has not dismissed the possibility of retaining Wilson at St James' Park.

"You transition from being the primary striker to a secondary one," he shared on the High Performance Podcast.

"In every match, there's no real competition for the starting spot right now, and that's justified.

"During my absence over the past 18 months, Alex has elevated his game significantly, which has been incredible for the team and has driven our overall improvement.

"Naturally, my role shifts, and I have to set aside my pride and ego, prioritize the team, and understand what's needed at that time.

"If I can't contribute majorly on the field, what can I do off it? How can I support other players? How can I remain myself without showing disappointment?

"It's tough, but I believe I'm finding the right balance. I've experienced lows and a range of emotions, especially with my contract ending in the summer.

"This season has brought a variety of emotional challenges and new obstacles that I've never encountered before."
