Sunderland are aiming to sign four or five new players this summer, with a focus on strengthening the spine of the team, according to Sky Sports.
There is a strong possibility they will break their transfer record again, having already done so this week with the £20m permanent signing of Enzo Le Fee.
The Black Cats are still working to convince Jobe Bellingham to stay, as a fee around £25m from Dortmund has not yet been agreed.
However, Dortmund believes they have an agreement with the player, and a deal appears likely.
Sunderland is not currently pursuing former captain Jordan Henderson, but this could change later in the transfer window depending on circumstances.
