Uncertainty surrounds Cristiano Ronaldo's immediate future. His contract with Al Nassr ends on June 30, and there are no indications of renewal. Meanwhile, several teams in the upcoming 32-team Club World Cup are reportedly interested in him.
Having the Portuguese star in the inaugural expanded Club World Cup in the United States would greatly enhance FIFA's marketing and publicity efforts. At 40, Ronaldo leads the Saudi Pro League in scoring and remains a key player for Portugal under Roberto Martínez, as they target the Nations League title in early June.
FIFA announced on Wednesday that the 32 participating clubs can sign players during a special registration window from June 1 to 10. According to their statement:
'In line with the Regulations for the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™ and the relevant amendments to the Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players, all 20 Member Associations whose clubs will participate in FIFA’s groundbreaking competition have confirmed the opening of an exceptional registration window from 1 to 10 June for all their affiliated clubs to allow new players signed to compete in the tournament. The deadline for the final player list has been set as 10 June 2025, allowing each participating club to bring any new players signed in this special window to the United States.'
The affected Member Associations are: Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Egypt, England, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea Republic, Mexico, Morocco, New Zealand, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Spain, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States.
So, what does this mean for Ronaldo? He could join a Club World Cup team before the tournament and then sign elsewhere for the 2025-26 season, or extend with Al Nassr. The only catch is reaching an agreement with Al Nassr for his release before June 30, or the club allowing him to participate.
If Al Nassr objects, clubs could use FIFA's additional window from June 27 to July 3 for two new signings, potentially including Ronaldo for the knockout stages.
This has sparked speculation about offers from Club World Cup teams, with Al Hilal and Brazilian clubs like Botafogo, Flamengo, Palmeiras, and Fluminense being prominently linked.
With multiple options and uncertainties, one thing is clear: Ronaldo has an opportunity to feature in the Club World Cup. The next couple of weeks will be decisive for his future.
