In an interview with Free FOOT, Fofana has revealed that he one day hopes to play for Marseille, as he is a supporter of the Ligue 1 giants, having grown up in the city. The defender, signed by the Blues in a £70 million ($91m) deal in 2022, has not played for Les Phoceens, but he did begin his career in France, with Saint-Etienne.
He said: "Olympique Marseille... We'll see one day. I still have a contract until 2029, we'll see. Marseille is my city, my club, I am an OM supporter. We'll see if I end up being at Marseille in a few years, or if I stay at Chelsea for the rest of my career."
He also revealed he considered a move to the club, adding: “I had a talk with Marseille that really touched me. It was from OM director Mehdi Benatia, it was special. I thought about it but there you go, the current objective is to succeed at Chelsea, to establish myself at my club."
@ClinicalNiko said, in reference to Romelu Lukaku seeking a move from Chelsea with that infamous interview with Sky Italia in December 2021: "FFS, he doing a Lukaku?"
@JakeD811 added: "Go today."
Meanwhile, @Haroldiinho_ wrote: "Ship him. Spent two years in the hospital wing earning 250k a week and then comes out flirting with a mid table French side."
@fawaznotionn said: "You're free to go dawg... you're not all that."
@kofiboakye_2 said: "Get him the f*ck out of the club January."
@CFCDUBois concluded: "Fofana openly saying he was considering leaving the club. One regular day of Chelsea will never happen."
Fofana has played 90 minutes in all three games thus far this season. Last season, after battling back from a knee injury, he made 15 league appearances and, as he has mentioned, has a contract that runs for another five years.
Chelsea play Bournemouth this weekend before a London derby against West Ham. It remains to be seen if Marseille will formalise their interest in coming transfer windows.
