Sevilla vs Real Madrid

Match preview

Sevilla have had little to celebrate this season, with a disappointing campaign leaving them close to the relegation zone. However, they secured their top-flight status for the 2025–26 season with a 1–0 victory over Las Palmas on Tuesday night.

This was Sevilla's first victory in Spain's top flight since 9 March, ensuring that the team will not face relegation fears in the final two gameweeks. With 41 points from 36 matches, they are seven points ahead of the bottom three.

Los Nervionenses finished 14th in La Liga last season, their worst result since relegation in 2000. There is a chance this could worsen, with the team potentially finishing as low as 17th.

Joaquín Caparrós's side have won six, drawn six and lost six of their 18 home league fixtures this season. They will be welcoming a Real Madrid team that has won only half of its 18 away league games in the 2024–25 campaign.

Los Nervionenses suffered a 4-2 defeat to Real Madrid in the reverse fixture at the Bernabéu earlier this season and have not managed to overcome Los Blancos since September 2018. However, the last time the two teams met at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán, the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

Real Madrid won the UEFA Super Cup in August, but have underperformed in La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League. Head coach Carlo Ancelotti is set to step down after a disappointing final season in charge.

He is leaving to take charge of the Brazilian national team, and Bayer Leverkusen's Xabi Alonso is expected to be announced as his replacement. It will be fascinating to see how Los Blancos line up next season under their former midfielder.

Real Madrid came from behind to beat Mallorca 2-1 on Wednesday night, with Jacobo Ramon scoring the winning goal in the final minutes. However, the result ultimately mattered little, as Barcelona claimed the title 24 hours later.

Los Blancos will finish their campaign with a home game against Real Sociedad next weekend, before turning their attention to the revamped Club World Cup. Their journey in the competition begins with a match against Al-Hilal on 18 June.

The club is set to have a fascinating transfer window, with deals for Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen believed to be imminent. The pair could potentially both be involved in the Club World Cup.

Injuries have seriously impacted Real Madrid towards the end of the season, but the show must go on, and the capital giants will already be looking ahead to the 2025–26 season under a new head coach.

Team News

Sevilla will welcome back Isaac Romero to their squad this weekend, but Kike Salas, Tanguy Nianzou, Ruben Vargas and Akor Adams are all doubtful for the home side due to injury.

If Salas does not recover in time, Nemanja Gudelj is likely to benefit, but Romero may have to settle for a place on the bench, as Álvaro García scored the winning goal against Las Palmas last time.

Dodi Lukebakio has been a standout performer for Sevilla this season, scoring 11 times in Spain's top flight. Los Nervionenses will need to work hard to keep him this summer, given the quality of his performances.

As for Real Madrid, Aurélien Tchouaméni will return from suspension in time, but Brahim Díaz, Andriy Lunin, Lucas Vázquez, Vinícius Júnior and Rodrygo all remain doubtful for the capital giants.

Meanwhile, Antonio Rüdiger, Ferland Mendy, David Alaba, Eduardo Camavinga, Éder Militão and Dani Carvajal are definitely out, so Los Blancos will field a makeshift team this weekend.

Kylian Mbappé has now scored 40 goals in his debut season with Real Madrid — an impressive feat — and the French international will be aiming to inspire his team to victory at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium.
