Liverpool fans might count the number of mistakes Arne Slot has made this season on one hand, but the Dutch manager arguably erred crucially in last weekend's match against Arsenal, where the Reds surged to a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz.
However, the momentum shifted dramatically at the start of the second half, as Arsenal, reinvigorated, pulled one back through Gabriel Martinelli, shortly before Trent Alexander-Arnold—headed to Real Madrid—was brought on amid boos from the home crowd.
The atmosphere had already soured due to Liverpool's lackluster start to the second half, and Alexander-Arnold's involvement, including playing Mikel Merino onside for Arsenal's equalizer, only worsened matters for the Premier League champions.
That 2-2 draw against their main rivals marked just the third time in Premier League history that Liverpool failed to win a home game when leading by two goals at halftime, though the team now seems mentally checked out.
Still, fans traveling south on Monday will hope to avoid Liverpool going winless in three straight Premier League games for the first time this season, as they haven't lost their final away match since the 2017-18 campaign.
Meanwhile, Brighton delivered a strong performance in their penultimate away game, defeating Wolves at Molineux, where veteran striker Danny Welbeck reached the 10-goal milestone in a Premier League season.
Welbeck's penalty was followed by a late winner from Brajan Gruda, helping Fabian Hurzeler's side stay close to eighth place and potential Conference League qualification.
Even with Crystal Palace's FA Cup final upset over Manchester City, eighth place could secure European football if Chelsea wins the FA Cup and finishes sixth or seventh, keeping hope alive for Brighton, Brentford, Bournemouth, and Fulham.
After earning just two points from 15 available between March 15 and April 19, Brighton's recent form has improved, collecting seven points from the last nine, though they haven't kept a clean sheet in their last six home games.
Additionally, Brighton has lost both meetings with Liverpool this season—a 3-2 home defeat in the EFL Cup and a 2-1 loss at Anfield—but they haven't been beaten by the Reds in a Premier League match at the Amex Stadium since March 2022.
There was little team news from Slot's pre-match press conference, suggesting Joe Gomez is still out with a hamstring injury and Tyler Morton sidelined due to a shoulder issue.
Slot hasn't ruled out starting Alexander-Arnold on the south coast, especially if injury-prone Conor Bradley isn't risked, but Jarell Quansah could be a more favored option.
Monday might see Mohamed Salah achieve a milestone by scoring his 17th away goal in a Premier League season, though he has failed to score or assist in five of his last seven games.
For Brighton, Fabian Hurzeler gets a boost with Joao Pedro returning from suspension and Lewis Dunk and Joel Veltman recovering from injuries.
However, Georginio Rutter (ankle) might only feature in Brighton's final game, while James Milner (thigh), Ferdi Kadioglu (toe), and Solly March (knee) continue to recover.
The fit-again Veltman may struggle to displace makeshift right-back Mats Wieffer, a former Slot favorite from Feyenoord, but Pedro is set to return in attack alongside 10-goal scorer Welbeck.
Brighton & Hove Albion possible starting lineup:
Verbruggen; Wieffer, Dunk, Van Hecke, Estupinan; Baleba, Ayari; Minteh, Pedro, Mitoma; Welbeck
Liverpool possible starting lineup:
Alisson; Bradley, Quansah, Van Dijk, Tsimikas; Endo, Mac Allister; Salah, Jones, Gakpo; Diaz
