Inter Milan vs Lazio

Match preview

Last weekend was almost a perfect Sunday for Inter, as they won 2-0 away against a tricky Torino side and then watched Napoli surprisingly drop points at home to Genoa.

This has reignited the title race, with Napoli's lead shrinking from three points to just one. However, Inzaghi is torn between focusing on the Scudetto and the upcoming Champions League final.

This weekend's fixtures are now even more important because they represent the toughest tests for both the top two teams. A defeat for Inter could hand the title to Napoli if Antonio Conte's team beat struggling Parma.

Inter's recent form at San Siro has been sensational, though, with seven wins in their last eight Serie A matches, as well as the dramatic Champions League semi-final victory against Barcelona earlier this month.

Last week's win over Torino means that former Lazio boss Inzaghi also enters this fixture as just the second manager in Serie A history to win 100 matches with two different clubs, joining Nils Liedholm in that exclusive club.

One of those 100 wins came in emphatic fashion against Lazio, Inter's former employers, as they battered them 6-0 at the Stadio Olimpico. This means that the Nerazzurri could complete a league double for the first time since 2016-17.

Inter have won four of their last five home games against Lazio, but the last match here ended in a draw. The visitors will be hoping to replicate that result, but manager Marco Baroni has a poor record against their upcoming opponents, having drawn one and lost seven of his eight meetings with them.

Morale should be high in the Lazio camp, though, as they kept their Champions League hopes alive with a late equaliser against top-four rivals Juventus last weekend.

Baroni's team took advantage of Pierre Kalulu's red card, with Matias Vecino scoring in the 96^(th) minute to deny Juve all three points and keep the two clubs level on 64 points heading into the penultimate weekend.

However, Lazio start the weekend in fifth place due to their inferior head-to-head record against Juventus. Bologna and Roma are close behind, and with the toughest fixture on paper, the Biancocelesti could fall this weekend.

Lazio have not missed out on European qualification since the 2016–17 season, but that is a real possibility given how tight it is between fourth and ninth. They will face a Lecce side who could be battling for their lives on the final day.

However, being away from home this weekend should not deter Lazio, as they have won all of their last nine matches away from the Olimpico, against Atalanta, Genoa and Empoli. They could win four away matches in a row for the first time in three years.

Team News

Even though the Champions League final is approaching, Inzaghi cannot afford to make too many changes if he wants to win the title, so expect to see the strongest possible team line-up.

Lautaro Martínez may miss out again after playing through the pain barrier for 75 minutes against Barcelona in the dramatic semi-final, while Davide Frattesi, the match-winner on that occasion, is also struggling with an abdominal injury.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Benjamin Pavard are also set to miss out due to injury, but Kristjan Asllani should be fit despite sustaining a knock in the match against Torino last week.

Lazio will be without Mattia Zaccagni and left-back Luca Pellegrini, who are both suspended, while Nuno Tavares is also out injured on the left-hand side of defence.

Therefore, it is a relief that Lazio have Manuel Lazzari and Elseid Hysaj back from injury and suspension, which gives Baroni more options in the defensive wide areas. The versatile Patric is currently dealing with an ankle issue.
