Two of the worst teams in the Premier League will compete in the Europa League final next week, as Tottenham faces Manchester United in Bilbao. Tottenham advanced by defeating Bodø/Glimt, marking their first European final since 2019, while Manchester United progressed easily past Athletic Club, aiming for their third major trophy in three years.

It was confirmed on Monday that Felix Zwayer will referee the match at San Mamés. His most recent game was PSG's 2-1 victory over Arsenal, where he awarded a controversial penalty against Myles Lewis-Skelly.

In his last Europa League match, Zwayer gave a penalty to Olympiacos and sent off their goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis in their 2-1 win over Bodø/Glimt in March. He has a history of controversy, including a match-fixing scandal in 2005 that led to a six-month ban, which Jude Bellingham referenced in 2021 while at Borussia Dortmund.

Zwayer frequently issues cards, with an average of 4.06 yellow cards in the Bundesliga and 5.14 bookings in the Champions League this season. He has issued more red cards (4) than any other referee in the Champions League in 2024/25.

This won't be his first time officiating Tottenham or Manchester United. He has refereed two Tottenham matches, both ending in draws or losses: a draw with Fiorentina in 2016 and a 4-2 loss to Barcelona in 2018.

For Manchester United, he has officiated four games, with two wins (against Benfica and Villarreal) and two draws (against FC Rostov and Sevilla in 2023).

With high stakes in Bilbao, attention will be on Zwayer. Fans of both teams may blame him for any unfavorable decisions, given his history with penalties and red cards.
