The battle for Premier League European competition qualifications is fierce, and ten Premier League teams are expected to enter the European arena next season.
The top seven teams will be guaranteed to participate in European competitions, but only the top five can get a Champions League seat. Currently, there is only one point difference between the five teams ranked third to seventh. In addition, the four teams between eighth and eleventh are only five points apart, and the eighth place may still qualify for European competitions.
Champions League qualification
The top five Premier League teams will advance to the Champions League next season. Due to the outstanding performance of Premier League clubs in European competitions this season, England ranks in the top two in the UEFA Association Club Coefficient Ranking, so it has an additional "European Performance Quota". This means that there will be six Premier League teams participating in the Champions League next season, including the top five in the league and the winner of the Europa League final between Manchester United and Tottenham on May 21. At present, Liverpool and Arsenal have locked in the top five, while Newcastle, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Manchester City and Nottingham Forest are still competing for the remaining three places. It is worth mentioning that Nottingham Forest will face Chelsea at home in the last round of the season, which will be a key matchup.
English teams get two Europa League places
English teams have won two Europa League places this season. One of them is usually awarded to the fifth place in the Premier League, but this season, since England has an additional Champions League place, this place will be given to the sixth place. The other Europa League place belongs to the FA Cup champion Crystal Palace, who beat Manchester City 1-0 at Wembley Stadium to win the championship.
UEFA qualification
The League Cup champion will qualify for the UEFA. This season, Newcastle defeated Liverpool at Wembley Stadium, ending a 56-year wait for the trophy and thus obtaining a place in the European competition.
How does the eighth place enter the European arena?
According to the regulations, the UEFA champion will qualify for the Europa League, and Chelsea will play against Real Betis in Wroclaw, Poland on May 28. If the Blues win this game, their final position in the Premier League standings will directly affect the eighth-ranked team.
1. Chelsea finishes 7th and wins the UEFA Champions League
UEFA Champions League qualification: 1st to 5th, and UEFA Champions League winners Manchester United or Tottenham
UEFA Champions League qualification: 6th, FA Cup winners Crystal Palace, Chelsea becomes UEFA Champions League champions (ranked 7th)
UEFA Champions League qualification: 8th in the Premier League
2. Chelsea finishes 6th and wins the UEFA Champions League, and Newcastle finishes 7th
UEFA Champions League qualification: 1st to 5th, and UEFA Champions League winners Manchester United or Tottenham
UEFA Champions League qualification: Newcastle (7th), FA Cup winners Crystal Palace, Chelsea becomes UEFA Champions League champions (ranked 6th)
UEFA Champions League qualification: 8th in the Premier League
In either case, there will be 10 teams in the Premier League next season, and half of the Premier League teams will play in European competitions. For those clubs that hope to finish 8th, Bournemouth, Brentford and Brighton, there is still a lot to do.
