Ruben Amorim insisted he will leave Manchester United “with no compensation” if the board decide he is not the right man for the job.

United were beaten 1-0 by Tottenham in the Europa League final, as Brennan Johnson’s first-half goal settled a scrappy encounter in Bilbao.

Micky van de Ven produced an acrobatic clearance off the line and Guglielmo Vicario made saves to deny Alejandro Garnacho and Luke Shaw, but it was otherwise a toothless display in attack from United.

It means the club will not be in Europe next season, and they head into the final weekend of the season sitting 16th in the Premier League.

Amorim has failed to oversee an upturn in United’s fortunes since replacing Erik ten Hag in November, but he insisted he will not change his principles.

“I have nothing to show to the fans, so in this moment it is a little bit of faith,” Amorim said in his post-match press conference.

“Let’s see. I am always open, if the board and fans feel I am not the right guy, I will go in the next day without any conversation about compensation. But I will not quit.

“I am really confident on my job. As you see I will not change nothing in the way I do things.”

Despite the defeat, Amorim insisted his side “tried everything” to equalise against Spurs and insisted they were the “better” team in the final.

"I was always really honest with you guys,” the United boss said.

“We didn't perform perfect today but we were better than the opponent. In the second half we tried everything.

“There are some days we were poor but today was not the day."
