According to reports, Florian Wirtz has informed Bayern Munich that he is joining Liverpool in a deal that will break the British transfer record.
The German attacking midfielder is one of the most sought-after players on the summer transfer market.
However, football journalist Sacha Tavolieri reports that Wirtz is now just one step away from moving to the Anfield club.
Additionally, Fabrizio Romano's follow-up report confirms that Liverpool has made a formal approach for the 22-year-old, with approval from all parties.
Just days ago, it was revealed that Manchester City withdrew from the race to sign the Bayer Leverkusen star due to concerns over the potential total cost reaching £252 million.
Despite the high figures, both German champions Bayern Munich and English champions Liverpool remained interested.
Tavolieri also states that Wirtz initially told Manchester City he would join Vincent Kompany's team in Bavaria.
Nevertheless, the 22-year-old and his team have reportedly changed their mind after meetings with Liverpool representatives.
Wirtz has now personally notified Bayern Munich's management of his decision to join Liverpool.
This development brings him closer to a Liverpool move, especially after reports of him house-hunting in the city.
Arne Slot's Liverpool side is preparing to finalize the transfer agreement, with owners Fenway Sports Group approving the substantial £126 million fee.
The club now aims to complete the full agreement in the coming days.
This fee exceeds Liverpool's current record signing by £50 million, surpassing the £75 million paid for Virgil van Dijk in January 2018.
Darwin Nunez's transfer fee could have been higher if certain incentives were met.
The deal will also surpass the £115 million record Chelsea paid for Moises Caicedo from Brighton in 2023.
Wirtz contributed 16 goals and 15 assists in 45 games this season, helping his club finish second in the Bundesliga under Xabi Alonso, who is confirmed to be leaving.
Liverpool's pursuit of Wirtz follows links to potential signings of his teammate Jeremie Frimpong and Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez to strengthen their full-back positions.
