The 38th round of La Liga fixtures began today, with Atlético Madrid playing away against Girona. Atlético Madrid secured an easy victory, with substitute Sørloth scoring a hat trick. They ended the La Liga season with 76 points.
Diego Simeone made the most of the rotations in the line-up, with Musso, Azpilicueta and Witsel getting the chance to start.
The first half was rather dull. In the 17th minute, Girona midfielder Herrera headed the ball, which was then caught by Musso. Álvarez then had two shots saved by Krapyvtsov, the 19-year-old Ukrainian goalkeeper who made his home debut in front of Girona's home fans and performed impeccably in the first half.
The second half started equally tepidly until Simeone sent on Sørloth. The Norwegian striker, who came on as a substitute in the 62nd minute, changed the whole game by himself.
In the 69th minute, he received a cross from De Paul and broke the deadlock. Then, in the 90th minute, he received a pass from England international Gallagher, cut inside and scored after adjusting on the right side of the penalty area. Finally, in the 90+3rd minute, Álvarez made a selfless pass during a counterattack and Sørloth completed a hat-trick in front of an empty goal.
Sørloth was undoubtedly elected Man of the Match after the game. Central defender Lenglet also received high scores after scoring a goal in the penalty area in the 87th minute.
After completing their La Liga fixtures, Atlético Madrid will travel to the United States in June to participate in the Club World Cup. Their first-round opponents in the group stage will be Paris Saint-Germain, with the game kicking off at 8 pm on 15 June.
