Luis Suárez and Lionel Messi have been teammates on the field for years. Now, they're collaborating off it as entrepreneurs.
Suárez announced on Tuesday that he has established a professional soccer club in his home country of Uruguay, with his Inter Miami colleague joining the venture.
As Uruguay's all-time leading scorer, Suárez shared in a social media video that the team, previously known as Deportivo LS, will now be renamed LSM and will compete in Uruguay's fourth division.
"Deportivo LS is a family dream that started in 2018. We've expanded significantly with over 3,000 members," Suárez said. "I aim to provide Uruguayan soccer—the sport I love and where I grew up—with opportunities and resources for young teens and children to develop."
The 38-year-old Suárez, who retired from international soccer last September, played alongside Messi at Barcelona for six seasons and has been with him at Inter Miami for the past two years.
"I'm thrilled and honored that you chose me, and I hope to contribute as much as possible to keep growing this project, especially standing by your side," said Messi, who appeared with Suárez in the video.
Details on Messi's exact role remain unclear, though local reports suggest he will be a partner. It's also reported that Álvaro Recoba, a former Uruguay national team player and Inter Milan star, will serve as the team's coach.
The announcement included the launch of the club's Instagram account, which gained over 40,000 followers within two hours.
Suárez and his family opened a 20-acre sports complex in 2018 in Ciudad de la Costa, near Montevideo, offering various activities for more than 3,000 members.
The facility features a synthetic turf stadium with a capacity of 1,400 spectators, along with other playing fields.
