In a Monday interview, LaLiga president Javier Tebas reiterated that he considers the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup "completely absurd."

The tournament, scheduled from June 14 to July 13 in the United States, will feature a new format with 32 teams participating.

"It is completely absurd," Tebas told Cadena Cope radio. "It's not just about the physical strain on players, which is evident, but the Club World Cup model disrupts the entire ecosystem of national leagues, especially in Europe."

Only Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid are the Spanish teams participating in the Club World Cup.

However, if these teams advance to the later stages, with quarterfinals set for July 4-5, it could negatively impact LaLiga, according to Tebas.

LaLiga is set to begin on August 16-17.

"There is already controversy about when Real Madrid and Atlético will start LaLiga, which disrupts our standard football schedule and harms us in the medium term," Tebas said.

"The decision on whether Real Madrid and Atlético will delay their LaLiga start for rest is not mine alone. It will be made later based on their status. But we cannot keep adjusting our schedule for competitions we oppose.

"They haven't consulted us on dates or anything else. This is damaging Spanish football, especially if major teams like Real Madrid or Atlético miss the opening day of LaLiga."

Tebas has criticized FIFA for not consulting leagues on decisions like staging the Club World Cup every four years, similar to their handling of the 2022 World Cup's winter move or expanding the men's World Cup to 48 teams from 2026.
