Ilkay Gündogan criticized aspects of Manchester City's performance despite their commanding 6-0 win against Al Ain, stating that a "slow" start to the second half prevented them from scoring a crucial seventh goal.

Manchester City required a 7-0 victory to ensure that a draw against Juventus in Orlando on Thursday would suffice to lead their group in the Club World Cup.

Pep Guardiola's squad scored six goals, with contributions from two by Gundogan, one each from Claudio Echeverri, Rayan Cherki, Oscar Bobb, and a penalty by Erling Haaland.

The goals by Echeverri and Cherki marked their first for Manchester City, but failing to net the seventh means the team must defeat Juventus to top Group G.

"It felt like we needed that seventh goal at the end," Gundogan said. "We targeted it at halftime, but we didn't start the second half strongly enough and were a bit sluggish, which ultimately cost us."

The win secures Manchester City's spot in the round of 16.

After substitute Cherki made it 6-0 in the 89th minute, the players quickly returned to the halfway line in pursuit of another goal.

There was still time for Manchester City to create a prime opportunity for Phil Foden, whose close-range shot was saved.

"Even in the first half, there were brief periods where our passing and overall play lacked precision," Gundogan added.

"This is something we must address and improve upon, as at the elite level, we cannot afford to underperform for extended periods."

"It felt quite extended, honestly—at least five or 10 minutes beyond our usual standards."

"A seventh goal would have boosted our chances, but in the end, it doesn't change the fact that we need a strong performance against Juventus and a win."

Gundogan's two goals, including a exquisite chip into the far corner, earned him the man-of-the-match honors.

The 34-year-old has been rumored to leave Manchester City this summer due to interest from Galatasaray, but he indicated post-match that he wishes to remain.

"I have one year left on my contract and I'm very content here—everyone knows that," he said.

"I'm dedicated to the competition and enjoying my football. I still believe I have several years left at the top level if I maintain my fitness."

"I demonstrated last season by not missing a game. I'm available, fit, and eager to play at the highest level for much longer."
