Botafogo have silenced their doubters by advancing to the Club World Cup round of 16, with Alex Telles stating that the Brazilian club disproved critics who claimed they traveled to the U.S. simply to visit Mickey.

Although Botafogo lost their final group match 1-0 to Atletico Madrid, Telles and his teammates secured a spot in the round of 16 by finishing second in Group B.

"It's tough to discuss right now," said the former Manchester United player Telles. "PSG and Atletico showed more respect than many fans and pundits did. The team accomplished what was needed to move to the next stage."

"Here we are, advancing to the round of 16 in the so-called group of death, despite claims that we came just to see Mickey at Disneyland. This qualification reflects the hard work of this remarkable group."

Botafogo will now face the Group A winners, either Inter Miami CF or Palmeiras, on Saturday, while PSG will play the runners-up on Sunday.

Antoine Griezmann's late goal gave Atletico the win, but it wasn't enough to surpass Botafogo's goal difference. Captain Marlon Freitas highlighted the significance of reaching the knockout stage against two European giants.

"We aimed to win and had our opportunities. We defended well and deserved at least a draw. That late goal was disappointing since we wanted to top the group," Freitas told TV Globo.

"Still, we should celebrate. Before the tournament, few believed we could compete against these top teams from major European leagues. We've demonstrated the strength of Brazilian football. As South American champions, we deserve recognition."

Botafogo earned their place in this summer's Club World Cup by winning the Brazilian Serie A title in 2024 and the Copa Libertadores.

Coach Renato Paiva added: "If I had predicted back in Brazil that we'd advance from this group, I would have faced heavy criticism. But we've achieved the unexpected."

"We must thank the Botafogo fans and take pride in what we've done for Brazilian football."
