From being labeled as underdogs to securing second place in Group A, Inter Miami made club history by qualifying for the 2025 Club World Cup round of 16. The team drew 2-2 against Palmeiras on Monday night at Hard Rock Stadium, with goals from Tadeo Allende and Luis Suárez securing their spot in the knockouts.
Palmeiras fans in Miami Gardens booed as the stadium announcer introduced Lionel Messi and Suárez in the starting lineup, aiming to unsettle the MLS team. By the second half, pink smoke filled the 100's section behind the Palmeiras goal, with Inter Miami supporters cheering with instruments and overshadowing the Brazilian contingent.
Before the tournament began, Inter Miami players and officials downplayed expectations, citing a lack of roster depth compared to other competitors.
'It's clear that we are not at the level to compete in the Club World Cup, but we will try,' said Busquets in May.
Head coach Javier Mascherano and co-owner Jorge Mas set modest goals, viewing qualification to the round of 16 as a major success. Inter Miami not only competed but exceeded expectations by advancing from a tough group featuring FC Porto, Palmeiras, and Al Ahly.
While Suárez and Messi delivered key goals during the group stage, the team's real strength came from its young supporting players who handled immense pressure. Academy graduates like Noah Allen, Ian Fray, and Benjamin Cremaschi stepped up, facing high-stakes matches against FC Porto and Palmeiras for the first time.
Despite early mistakes, these young players adapted quickly, helping Inter Miami achieve its internal targets.
Now, the team advances to the round of 16 to face Paris Saint-Germain, where Messi will confront his former club amid lingering tensions, adding drama to the South Florida team's journey.
