Manchester City could be set for a tidy multi-million-pound windfall if former academy star Jamie Gittens joins Chelsea from Borussia Dortmund this summer.
The Londoners reportedly made a £30m bid for the 20-year-old over the weekend and hope to sign him before Tuesday's Club World Cup deadline.
Gittens, who spent two years at Manchester City after joining from English Football League side Reading in 2018, has reportedly already agreed personal terms on a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge.
However, it is claimed Dortmund will demand more than £30m for the England youth international, who has gone from strength to strength at the Signal Iduna Park since signing in 2020.
In total, Gittens, who primarily plays on the left, has scored 17 goals and laid on 14 assists in 106 games for the Bundesliga outfit.
The sight of Chelsea pursuing a deal for one of the brightest talents in Europe would be enough to initiate an audible exhale for most teams across the Premier League, but that won't necessarily be the case for City.
That's because the Mail claims City inserted a 10% sell-on clause in the deal that took Gittens from East Manchester to North Rhine-Westphalia more than five years ago, therefore entitling them to a slice of any transfer fee Dortmund receive this summer.
At this moment in time, no further details have been reported on how much City could bank if Gittens were to leave Dortmund.
But when two clubs agree on such a clause, the sell-on fee typically only relates to any profit that is made by the seller.
And given that Gittens left City for only a couple of million pounds more than five years ago, City could end up with a healthy boost to the coffers.
