Schalke wrote in the official announcement: "After four consecutive defeats, the club's board of directors and sports management decided on the evening of May 2 to immediately dismiss head coach Van Onderen and assistant coach Molenar. The defeats against Kaiserslautern (1-2) and Paderborn (0-2) were the key factors in making this decision."

"U23 head coach Jacob Finpel will take over the team until the end of the season."

Currently, Schalke ranks 13th in the Bundesliga with 38 points. The team has not won in the past four rounds and is only 6 points higher than the relegation play-off zone.
