A second-half goal from substitute Ibrahim Sulemana secured a 2-1 home win for Atalanta over AS Roma in Monday's Serie A match, ensuring Champions League qualification for Gian Piero Gasperini's team.

This will be Atalanta's fifth appearance in Europe's elite club competition since 2019.

Sulemana sealed the win for Atalanta in the 76^(th) minute with a low strike from just outside the area, after Roma midfielder Bryan Cristante cancelled out an early opener by Ademola Lookman.

Having fallen behind in the title race, Atalanta now sit third in the standings with 71 points, seven ahead of fourth-placed Juventus and fifth-placed Lazio, with two games left to play.

Roma, who failed to capitalise on Lazio and Juventus dropping points in Saturday's 1-1 stalemate, are sixth with 63 points.

Atalanta ended the visitors' impressive unbeaten league run of 19 games; Claudio Ranieri's side had not been defeated since mid-December at Como.

Next weekend, Roma will host AC Milan before visiting mid-table Torino in their bid to qualify for Europe's elite club competition for the first time since the 2018–19 campaign.

Atalanta will travel to Genoa on Sunday before welcoming lowly Parma to the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia for their final fixture.

Earlier this season, Atalanta went on an 11-game winning streak, which took them to the top of the standings in December. However, a winless run of four matches dropped them to third place, where they have remained ever since.
