Rodrygo is no longer a guaranteed starter at Real Madrid, and Premier League clubs have taken notice. The Brazilian forward has faced challenges at the Bernabéu: he was substituted at halftime during the Copa del Rey Clásico final, omitted from the squad against Celta Vigo, benched in Montjuïc, and withdrawn from training before the Mallorca game due to discomfort in his right leg.
Moreover, he hasn’t scored since early March, during Real Madrid’s Champions League round of 16 first leg against Atlético. With just one goal in his last 22 games, the 24-year-old appears low on confidence, drawing interest from English clubs sensing an opportunity.
Rodrygo has consistently attracted attention from top Premier League teams, particularly Manchester City. Last summer, Pep Guardiola’s side made an inquiry after selling Julián Álvarez to Atlético Madrid for $81 million (€75M) plus $22 million (€20M) in add-ons. Although Rodrygo, contracted until 2028, declined at the time, his position may be changing. In a GQ interview, he praised City as 'the best team in the world, playing the best football.'
Arsenal, under Mikel Arteta, is seeking attacking reinforcements this summer. With Andrea Berta overseeing recruitment, the Gunners aim to end their trophy drought. They have already signed Martín Zubimendi for midfield and are pursuing a proven No. 9, along with another attacker to boost competition on the left wing, where Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard have underperformed. Rodrygo is on Berta’s shortlist, alongside names like Alexander Isak, Benjamin Šeško, Hugo Ekitike, Viktor Gyökeres, Ollie Watkins, Nico Williams, and Antoine Semenyo.
'I have a soft spot for Rodrygo – I love his style,' said Spain international and Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino in an interview with El Larguero before facing Real Madrid in the Champions League. 'He’s technically outstanding, possesses every attribute you need, and can play centrally, on the wing, or stretch defenses... I’m a big fan.'
Liverpool could also join the competition, even after extending Mohamed Salah’s contract until 2027 and with Luis Díaz reaffirming his commitment to Anfield. Potential departures of Darwin Núñez, and uncertainties around Diogo Jota and Federico Chiesa, might leave Arne Slot’s attack vulnerable. Meanwhile, Manchester United and Chelsea are likely contenders in any Premier League transfer saga.
Both clubs’ plans depend on Champions League qualification – United through the Europa League, Chelsea via their Premier League standing. Anticipated exits in attack could spark interest in Rodrygo; United is considering selling Alejandro Garnacho for funds, while Chelsea may part ways with Christopher Nkunku after his underwhelming season.
However, acquiring Rodrygo won’t be cheap. His release clause is a massive $1.08 billion (€1B), but Real Madrid might negotiate from $108 million (€100M). If a Premier League club offers a nine-figure sum, the Spanish club will engage. The summer transfer window hasn’t opened yet, but it promises to be eventful for both Real Madrid and the Premier League.
