England failed to reach the semi-finals of the Women's Nations League after losing to group winners Spain, largely due to Claudia Pina's impressive performance.

Substituting in the 58th minute, she was outstanding, scoring twice in 10 minutes to secure the hosts a well-deserved victory, following Alessia Russo's initial goal for England.

Russo's 22nd-minute opener came against the run of play when she broke away on a one-on-one with goalkeeper Catalina Coll and calmly slotted the ball past her.

This sparked boos from the home fans in Barcelona, as forward Salma Paralluelo believed that she had been fouled in the build-up by England defender Niamh Charles, and Spanish staff protested to the officials while the visitors celebrated.

The crowd became increasingly frustrated minutes later when Spain were denied a penalty after the ball appeared to hit Charles' outstretched arm.

There were countless more chances, with Esther González being denied by a smart reaction save from Lionesses goalkeeper Hannah Hampton and Patricia Guijarro going close with a powerful effort from the edge of the box.

England defiantly soaked up the pressure, but were fortunate to maintain their lead at half-time.

In-form Barcelona forward Pina did not take long to make an impact, equalising two minutes after coming on as she cleverly weaved her way into the box before slipping the ball past Hampton, who had left too much room in the far corner.

England needed to respond if they were to stand any chance of reaching the last four, but the world champions continued to pile on the pressure, with Pina stealing the show by scoring a superb second goal in the 70th minute.

The 23-year-old picked up the ball on the edge of the box and curled a beautiful finish inside the post to find the corner.

It was a worthy winner, sending Spain through, while Sarina Wiegman's England side turned their focus to Euro 2025, which kicks off in Switzerland on 2 July.
