After speculation that the Boston Celtics could move on from veteran guard Jrue Holiday, the trade has now been confirmed.

According to Shams Charania of ESPN, the Celtics have traded Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for Anfernee Simons and two second-round picks.

'BREAKING: The Boston Celtics have traded Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers for Anfernee Simons and two second-round picks, sources tell ESPN,' Charania reported.

Holiday, who played a key role in the Celtics' championship win last season, is one of the NBA's top guard defenders. It's unclear if the Trail Blazers will keep him, but this deal looks advantageous for Boston.

Holiday, who has shown All-Star potential during his time with the Milwaukee Bucks and other teams, didn't fully showcase that in Boston.

In Boston, he was a fourth or fifth option, and his stats reflected this. He averaged 11.1 points per game last season, shooting 44.3% from the field and 35.3% from three-point range, his lowest since 2019-2020.

The Trail Blazers, who were among the weakest teams in the Western Conference last year, have promising young players. Letting go of Simons is notable, but this is a strong move for the Celtics.

Simons averaged 19.3 points per game last season, with a 36.3% three-point shooting rate.

With Jayson Tatum expected to miss significant time next season, the Celtics' plans are uncertain, but this trade strengthens their immediate and future outlook.
