Bruno Fernandes insists that winning the Europa League will not redeem Manchester United's underwhelming season.

Under Ruben Amorim, the team sits 14th in the Premier League, with four games left, following a last-gasp draw against Bournemouth on Sunday.

Nevertheless, they could end the campaign on a high by securing a European trophy and qualifying for next season's Champions League.

However, before their Europa League semi-final first leg against Athletic Bilbao on Thursday, captain Fernandes maintains it won't change the overall narrative.

The Portuguese midfielder stated: "I wouldn’t call it a reward; it's merely a success within the Europa League context.

"It's crucial to win the trophy this season, but it won’t alter the bigger picture."

Athletic Bilbao, fourth in LaLiga, has extra motivation to reach the final, as it will be hosted in their home city next month.

Fernandes added: "If they defeat us, they'll play the final at home, making it a formidable challenge. We must be ready."

Manchester United managed a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth on Sunday.

The Red Devils trailed after Antoine Semenyo scored in the 23rd minute.

Evanilson received a red card 20 minutes from the end, giving United a chance to fight back.

Rasmus Hojlund, who has been struggling for goals, scored in the 96th minute, impacting Bournemouth's European aspirations.
