Coventry manager Frank Lampard believes his team's last-gasp defeat in the Championship play-off semi-final at Sunderland was one of the most heartbreaking moments in his career.
Dan Ballard's header in extra-time stoppage time propelled Sunderland to Wembley in a thrilling turnaround, ending the match 1-1 and the aggregate 3-2, setting up a Championship play-off final against Sheffield United on May 24.
However, it was a devastating blow for Coventry manager Lampard, as the Sky Blues' hopes of Premier League promotion were dashed on Wearside.
When asked about the cruelty of football, the former England and Chelsea midfielder told Sky Sports: "Yes, this is perhaps the starkest example I've encountered.
"First, congratulations to Sunderland for reaching the final. But I'm immensely proud of my players; over the two legs, we dominated at home and controlled large portions of this game.
"Considering where we started—from 17th in the league in December—the players have been outstanding in the second half of the season. We're competing effectively against teams with parachute payments in terms of our final standing.
"We approached this match with real courage, playing our style boldly. They had to yield to us due to our gameplay and the way our team managed the match. The players didn't deserve this outcome. I'm older and more experienced, so I've faced setbacks and enjoyed successes before.
"I can maintain a bit more perspective in my role, but for those players, this feels unjust. So, congratulations to Sunderland. We're not resentful, but we were clearly the stronger side across the two matches. That's why they'll be so elated with the win. They're heading to Wembley, yet from a football standpoint, we take immense pride.
"I couldn't ask for more from them. I'm deeply disappointed for the club, the fans, the owner, and the players. Once the initial pain fades, I can't fault the way they performed.
"You work with them daily, and they absorb information well; they're a united group, even seen on the pitch at the end. That's just football.
"I didn't need to say much because the players led by example on the field. They controlled it through extra-time.
"They dominated the second half; the crowd was noticeably quiet. They realized a determined team was taking charge on their home ground.
"It's truly cruel. But I can only feel pride for the season and for tonight.
"We aimed to reach Wembley, but sometimes circumstances align against you in unexpected ways.
"We want to strengthen the squad. The players have proven they can compete at this level. The fans deserve it at this club.
"I believe they'll go home tonight proud of their players and their support. And yes, I'm just disappointed they don't get that trip to Wembley."
