According to Sky Sports, Real Madrid have intensified their pursuit of Bournemouth's centre-back Dean Huijsen and are contemplating activating his £50m release clause.
The competition to sign Huijsen remains wide open, but like many players, he would likely find it hard to reject a move to Madrid if an agreement is reached.
Other clubs, including Chelsea, Arsenal, Bayern Munich, and Liverpool, have expressed interest in Huijsen, whose representatives maintain a strong relationship with Chelsea.
Chelsea are also exploring alternative centre-back options, such as Marc Guehi, Jarrad Branthwaite, and Jorrel Hato.
Chelsea had been seriously considering a bid for Hato from Ajax.
With Xabi Alonso set to be confirmed as Real Madrid's new head coach, the club is now viewed as the frontrunner to secure Huijsen, although Chelsea remains in contention.
