This Sunday, the final day of the Premier League, Newcastle United will face Everton at St James' Park with Champions League qualification still hanging in the balance. For Eddie Howe's side, the permutations are simple, as a win will see them qualify for the Champions League, but any slip-up will make it difficult for the Magpies to reach the final.

In the most intense competition in the history of European football, five teams still have a chance to qualify for the Champions League on the final day, with Manchester City the favorite to do so, while the other three teams are tied on points. Newcastle is one of them, with Chelsea, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa all waiting to take advantage of any points dropped by either team and fight for a top five spot.

The hosts' 1-0 defeat away to Arsenal last weekend means they will be anxious about the final league position, which was only their second defeat in 10 games. A draw for Newcastle at St James' this weekend means one of Chelsea and Nottingham Forest will surely overtake Newcastle in the table as they play each other, so Howe will be looking to United for help, with United needing to stop Villa winning.

However, if Everton pull off an unexpected win here, Villa would only need a point at Old Trafford to leapfrog the Magpies, which shows just how tight the competition is for these much-sought-after spots. Newcastle are favourites to advance, though, with Opta predicting a better than 80 per cent chance of them finishing in the top five, largely thanks to their run of six consecutive Premier League home wins.

Moyes will be hoping Everton have a good run in this match, as they have won six of their nine games between 2011 and 2019 but have only managed one point in their last four trips to St James'. However, Everton's most recent trip to Newcastle went well, with the club withstanding intense pressure and finally taking a point from a Dominic Calvert-Lewin penalty. In another match in October, there was even more drama from 12 yards, as former Everton player Anthony Gordon's shot was saved by boyhood Sunderland fan Jordan Pickford.

Expectations are low for the visitors, who will finish 13th regardless of the result, but if they take all three points here they have a chance to end a season with three consecutive wins for the first time since the 1980s. Liverpool's farewell game at Goodison Park last weekend saw an impressive comeback win away to Fulham, followed by a 2-0 win over Southampton, with excited fans giving the Old Lady a well-deserved send-off.

Newcastle United predicted starting lineup:

Pope; Schar, Portman, Burn; Murphy, Bruno Guimaraes, Tonali, Livramento; Gordon, Isaac, Barnes

Everton predicted starting lineup:

Joao Virginia; Young, O'Brien, Keane, Mykolenko; Alcaraz, Gueye, Garner, McNeil, N'Diaye; Beto
