Former Mexico national team striker Carlos Vela has announced his retirement. During his career, he has played for Arsenal, Real Sociedad, Los Angeles Galaxy and other teams. He has played 72 times for the Mexican national team, scoring 19 goals and providing 9 assists.
Mexico's most talented footballer has officially retired from playing. After being without a club for the past six months, the 36-year-old will continue to contribute to the team as the first ambassador for LAFC.
“Throughout my career, I have experienced very special moments, but the time has come to officially retire from professional soccer. There are not enough words to express my gratitude to my family, all the clubs that gave me a chance, and the fans for their support and affection. Thank you, Carlos. It has been an honor and a privilege to share my career with all of you," Vela wrote on social media.
After joining LAFC from Real Sociedad in the summer of 2017 as the first designated player in the history of the club, Vela quickly became the face of the team. He made his debut in March 2018 against LA Galaxy, in a derby match now known as "El Trafico".
He spent seven seasons with Los Angeles FC, scoring 93 goals and providing 53 assists in 189 games. These numbers are a testament to his central role, helping the team win two Supporters' Shield titles, one MLS Cup, and one US Open Cup, as well as leading the team to two CONCACAF Champions League finals on the international stage.
His highlight came in 2019, when he was named MLS Player of the Year and won the Golden Boot for 34 goals in the regular season, but the latter part of his career was a little quieter. After his contract expired at the end of 2023, he returned in 2024 after a nine-month hiatus and was a member of the US Open Cup winning team, but did not play, and his last appearance was in October 2024.
Vela added in his Twitter: "Los Angeles will always be very special to me and my family. We achieved the impossible in a short period of time and won titles together. My heart is full of gratitude.
Thank you, LAFC. Thank you, 3252. Thank you, Los Angeles."
